Pekar Prevails; Letterman Declared the Loser
I rewatched American Splendor recently and loved it more than ever. It also re-infuriated me by reminding me about Paul Giamatti's most egregious snubs. Really?! No Oscar nomination for American Splendor OR Sideways? Not even a nomination? He should have WON Best Actor both of those years, and he wasn't even nominated. You can't see it, but I'm shaking my head sadly right now.
Anyway, the movie piqued my Pekar interest, specifically about his final appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman. Watch Harvey Pekar blow up at Letterman. It's hilarious.
I don't really have strong feelings about Letterman one way or another. Actually, I've always leaned toward liking him. But something in me just LOVES when he gets put in his place. Why is that?
I graduated in May 2008 from Columbia College Chicago. I have a BA in Film with a concentration in Critical Studies. Film is my passion. I'm a full-time film buff and, more specifically, a classic film fanatic. I know the term "classic" is used very loosely, but I mean American films produced in the studio system between roughly 1930 and 1960. I love everything about this era. My second passion is writing, especially about film. I love doing research, deconstructing and analyzing films, and writing very academically and critically about them. I ultimately want to be a film historian, but I am also interested in working in archiving or preserving films. I want to write analysis or reviews for a publication, as well as my own books. Writing is a beautiful, artistic process to me, and I always need to be writing about film in some capacity in order to thrive as a scholar, a cinéphile, and a person. Now that I'm done with school for the time being, I need an outlet for writing about film on a regular basis. So what you'll find on here will solely be about film, with maybe the occasional entry on something else. I hope you enjoy reading what I have to say as much as I enjoy writing it.
I encourage and welcome comments and feedback. Just to clarify, since I know it's a bit confusing when you get there, you can post a comment and just leave your name without putting a URL. Please let me know how you think I'm doing. Whether you agree or disagree, or if you just like my writing, I'd love to hear it. Thanks for reading!
